Greetings Arkansas School Nurses,
I hope everyone is having a good start to the 2017-2018 school year. The first few months of a new school year seem to always bring new challenges but through such challenges we gain knowledge and growth.
Starting my second term as ASNA President I look forward to continue working with you and the ASNA board to move our organization forward and increase membership. Kris Lore stepped down from the position of treasurer to spend more time with her family. Many thanks to Kris for her service to ASNA . Amy Graves was inducted as Treasurer; a heartfelt welcome is extended to Amy. We have a new Regional Director for the northeast region as Tosha Handley has taken on this role. There is one Regional Director Position unfilled, the southwest region. Please contact me if you feel you would like to step into a leadership role and fill this position.
The ASNA Summer Conference 2017 in Fayetteville was great. We had 198 attendees from across the state with two attendees from Oklahoma and one attendee from Missouri. The conference speakers provided effective strategies for enhancing our school nursing practice. I extend my deepest appreciation to all ASNA members that assisted in helping provide services for a great educational conference. Watch for ‘Save the Date’ to be sent out soon. It will be a great opportunity for sharing, learning and networking.
Congratulations to the ASNA Excellence in School Nursing Award recipients:
- School Nurse of the Year – LeAnne Rhodes RN
- Midge Beatty Osborne Award –Terry Dycus, LPN
The National Association of School Nurses Conference 201 was held in San Diego, CA. The conferences had many learning sessions, poster presentations, vendors and a 5K walk/run. The 50th Annual Conference, NASN 2018, will be held in Baltimore, Maryland. I hope many of you will be able to attend this great learning opportunity.
Congratulations to the NASN Scholarship winner:
If you are not a member of ASNA, please consider joining. If you are a member of ASNA, please encourage a non-member fellow school nurse to join. We need every school nurse to join and become an active ASNA member. We need to stand together and advocate for ourselves and our profession. School nurses make a difference in the lives of our students and families, as well as our staff members. There is strength in numbers and our voices need to be heard. As a member of ASNA you also receive membership to NASN. Dues can be paid annually or quarterly. Some of the benefits of membership include a free subscription to the Journal of School Nursing and NASN School Nurse, reduced registration fees for state and national conferences, online continuing education for free or reduced rates and discounted prices for NASN publications. It is a WIN/WIN deal! Go to the NASN website: www.nasn.org to see firsthand the benefits of membership.
Don’t forget to stay connected on the ASNA website: https://asna.nursingnetwork.com. Once on the website home page, be sure to click the green ‘Follow’ button to receive updates when new information is posted. I hope you will take advantage of the resources and information provided on this site. Yet another way to stay connected with our fellow members, the Arkansas School Nurses Association Facebook page is up and awaiting a ‘Like’ from you.
In closing, I hope your school year is uneventful and each one of you remembers to care for yourself and recharge on the weekends. Thank you for all the hard work and all you do to support our students each and every day.
Kathy Launder, RN
