Please take a moment to review SB569. This bill has passed through the Senate Education Committee and will go on to the House Committee. We urge you to please contact your local representatives about the wording of this bill. Here are some talking points and ASNA's guidance:

  • Adrenal Insufficiency does not belong in the Insulin Bill
  • This should be a Stand-Alone Bill for the chronic condition that it is
  • It refers to the medications insulin, glucagon, and hydrocortisone given separate, or together-this is not ever the situation
  • Needs an Educational component developed by the Arkansas State Board of Nursing and Approved by Department of Education
  • Needs physician orders with student triggers
  • Oral only for self-carry and self-administration
  • Injectable highly difficult to be given by student in a classroom
  • Notifications for teacher, school nurse, parents and possible 911 called and sent home if given
  • The Arkansas School Nurses Association was reached out to for language assistance, but none is reflected in this current bill

The Arkansas School Nurses Association will be happy to work with legislators when drafting bills that affect student health in the schools.    Please encourage members to reach out to yourself or ASNA.  It is my understanding that this did not occur and has led to a bill that does not meet the needs of students with Adrenal Insufficiency and the Volunteers that would be responsible for their care.  I feel students with Adrenal Insufficiency need protections, but this is not the appropriate bill for that to happen.

If you personally know any of the committee member, PLEASE reach out to them personally!
